Thanksgiving is a time for family - so what does one do when there is no family around? You dig through the family history and you find a relative - and randomly call them to invite them to dinner! (Yes, really!!)

They're Here!!

They're here! After four years of praying and conversing with this fantastic couple, they and their family have finally arrived here in England! They will be pastoring at a church about 25 mins down the road from us. They arrived early this morning from the USA, and Jeff (and another co-worker) took their vans (people movers) to the airport to pick up them and their luggage. They then came back to my full house for a WELCOMING PARTY!! What fun to have the house brimming with people!

Their eldest son is just a couple of weeks younger then my second son - and both named the same! They both have blond hair, and blue eyes, and have been asking about each other for some time now. They met only once before - as 6 month old babies, but today you'd never have known they weren't best buddies for years! They hugged and ran off together, talking excitedly like they were old friends.

We are so excited to have this wonderful couple here with us, and we are looking forward to getting to know their family better and better over the coming months (and years). Please remember them in your prayers as they settle into their new house, new city, new surroundings and new country, and find themselves a new "normal" for their family.

The weather is beautifully warm here - warmer then I think it's been all summer! Apparently we are having an Indian Summer! Despite the heat, the birds are flying away (who knew that Canadian geese live on the lakes of central Britain?) and we are seeing some amazing reds showing up in the leaves and bushes! It all feels a little comfortable and familiar....

Learning New Things Every Day

Baby I is learning more and more every day! Today he has prided himself in picking up all of Sir C's toys and putting them away in the bin - to the amusement of most of the family, but to the annoyance of Sir C who was trying to play with the train set!

He was SO proud of himself! Every time he dropped in a toy he bounced and clapped for himself!

Another new skill today - he's pushing cars around on the floor! He played with Lady R, and they pushed the car back and forth between them. It's so hard to believe he'll be ONE in just a month!

Lady R saw the doctor at the hospital again today, and they have decided, that because she is doing so well on the dairy-free, gluten-free, wheat-free diet, that they are going to go ahead and begin the testing process for celiac disease. I have mixed feelings about whether or not I'd like her to go through the testing - it's not a pleasant process, and it requires her to be back on both dairy and gluten every day for two weeks before the testing can begin.... but on the other hand, it would be helpful to know for sure, one way or the other.

Gifts, Guests and Games

A parcel arrived at our door this morning - a gift from GRANDMA! The children excitedly tore into it, and Lady R was especially delighted to find, inside, her favourite game - a game she had taken with her when we went camping this spring, but the rain and the cards did not fare well together.

She was almost giddy as we ate our dinner, excited to get things cleared away so she could engage our guest in a good game -- of SKIP-BO!

She dealt out the crisp, new cards, and we reviewed the rules briefly before diving in to a very excited game. Cards, bantering, and a good bit of sibling rivalry flew across the table.... can you guess who the victor was?

I imagine there will be another game again in my very near future - probably tomorrow afternoon!

We've been learning, in history, about the Romans - this week was the fall of the Roman empire, complete with the invasion of the barbarians. We decided to make our own Roman columns - then see what happened with the destruction brought on by the barbarians, and the ruin of time... The children had a great time, first designing their pillars - Sir J's was very intricate, complete with ivy and leaves winding around one of his pillars.

Lady R was practicing her reading while I was making dinner, and a bit pouty because no one wanted to sit and listen to her. Suddenly she got an inspired idea - she'd capture the baby and he'd have to listen - because he wouldn't be able to get away! It took him until about page 6 before he figured out how to tip the box and get out....

We have some new friends arriving soon in the UK!! The Reynolds family has sent off their belongings, and are following behind very soon. We are preparing for them, and excited about their impending arrival! Sir C (my 4 1/2 year old) is especially excited about the idea of another 4 1/2 year old boy joining the team. He is prepared to be instant friends.

Today the children were eyeing the map, trying to figure out the path that their plane will take to arrive in the UK.

One thing Sir J and I miss from Canada is "Cream de Menthe" - a potent mint sauce (non-alcholic) that is perfect for such things as.... Cream de Menthe squares, Grasshopper pie... or just pouring over ice cream. I haven't been able to find anything close to it here.

I casually mentioned it to a friend of mine - I can't even remember the situation, some many months back, and she surprised me by knowing what it was - and saying that it is available in nearby France. She said that, if she remembered, she'd keep an eye out for a bottle when she was next visiting. To be honest, I never thought much more about it.

Well.... She showed up at church one day, smiling slyly at me and handed me a LARGE bottle of the treasure! I could hardly believe it. I put it away, with plans to make her a treat with it before using it all up.

Well, today, the boys got through their schoolwork quickly and readily agreed to the challenge of making up some dairy-free, gluten-free cream de Menthe squares to share with our friends as a "thank you".

They crushed the gluten free biscuits (since I couldn't find gf graham cracker crumbs)
Later they admitted that this was the best part of the job - second only to licking out the bowls... good boys!

They measured the ingredients carefully, and prepared everything well, carefully layering the ingredients...

And ended up with a lovely product!

(don't give me a hard time that it's in a round pan instead of square - I use what I have - inside the center is lovely, minty and green!)

Each boy made one, so we had two finished products - one for us, and one for them. (Jeff and I hope to start back to slimming world tomorrow, so we only have tonight to indulge! lol) We packaged one up for our friends, and set it by the front door in the "usual" spot for Jeff to drop off...

While we were putting away the groceries, a sneaky little helper came in to give aid. Baby I grabbed the baby tomatoes out of the grocery bag and dove right into them! He polished off about 6 before we took them away - much to his protest - seems we have another tomato lover in the family!

Local Sites - MK Museum!

We checked out a local site, with our guest today, that we've heard a lot about - our local museum! Jeff dropped us all off, then went home for some quiet study time.

It was "Open Days", so we were able to get in for free! It was fantastic, so hands on and interactive for the children. I was really surprised that the children were welcome (and encouraged) to touch the antiques and try things out. They tried a player piano, antique view finder, a few other antique games, they toasted bread in an antique oven, checked out antique stores and their wares, climbed on trains and tractors and covered wagons, spent some time in an old schoolhouse, and even met a concrete snowman!

The children's favourite part was the telephone room! It was packed with all kinds of facinating communication tools, and included about 30 telephones - that the children could call and play with! The phones were literally "ringing off the hook" as they made call after call to one another. This is certainly a place we'll consider visiting again!

The only down side was the poor baby fussed and cried for most of the day - I'm not sure why. I hope he sleeps well tonight!

We took a trip to Salcy Forest, and enjoyed the "Tree Top Walk" together. It threatened rain all day, but not a drop came down until, tired and hungry, we all piled into the car for the drive home. It was a delightful day!

The children found about 15 wooden teepee shapes in the forest. We don't know why they were made, but they made for great entertainment and excitement!

The children are playing a game in which they must pass from one end of the log to the other, passing the others on the log, without falling off. It's a good challenge!!

It's a Small England After All!

We have some company with us this week, and we thought long and hard about how we could show her as much of England as possible in the short time she is here. We came up with the idea of visiting the miniature village -- it has all the "typical" British sites - only smaller! We saw castles (both complete and ones in ruins), the sea side, the dock side, trains, churches, cathedrals, a fair, manor houses, a rugby match, a football match, cricket, and so much more! We even saw a house fire and fire engines come to put it out. The kids were thrilled by all the details in the set ups.... but now they want to turn the back garden into their own little village!

Tomorrow school officially starts for the children in our area, but the teachers were back yesterday and today already. My children hosted a group of others for a "The Day Before We Return To School" play day! They had a great time - and I love the sound of laughter from many children ringing through the rooms.

FIRST DAY

Back at school!

There's something exciting about creasing a new textbook, or making a mark on a new notebook, of opening a package of new pens or pencils and erasers, and sharpening those new pencil crayons. A feeling of anticipation - the hope of things to come! The air was buzzing this morning as the children dove into their new routines and got to work! (Don't worry, I'm not foolish enough to think the excitement will last - but I'll take it for today!)

Sir J is starting Grade 5 (year 6) this year. We are trying out a new program for some of his subjects called "Switched on Schoolhouse" and he is VERY excited about it - it is a computer based program, so it is completely different then anything we've done before.

The one thing we are missing still is a French program - I thought we had one (we had ordered "Tell Me More" homeschool edition), but a problem with the order and our location meant that it didn't arrive, so we are going to need to look into some other options for French - fairly quickly!

Sir J has mixed feelings about going back to homeschooling. He is concerned that he will miss his friends (tho we plan to keep in touch with them regularly, and have succeeded well over the summer), but he is very happy to have a shorter school day - and, according to him, some more challenging things to do in school!

Lady R is starting Grade 2 (year 3) this year. She is content with the idea of homeschooling this year - with the understanding that I will allow her to do more cooking and baking! She is also excited about the idea of being able to help her younger brother with his schoolwork. This week she wants to be a teacher (and a vet, too)!

She will be using about half Abeka material - we need to back up and review some phonics and reading that she's missed out on over the past year, before we move on. Abeka does a great phonics program, so we are sticking to that this year.

Sir C is very excited about starting school - he doesn't care WHERE he does school, as long as his sister is there, too! Sir C is in K5 (Reception) this year. He has been practicing writing his name over and over so that he's ready to start - and working on his letters and sounds and counting, too! He's already ahead, and anxious to learn new things. He is using mainly Abeka as well, as we get a good start on phonics and reading this year.

Teething Woes

Baby I is teething - his top two are just starting to come in - and he's not very happy about it! He slept about 4 hours last night, and it's 2am today and he's just (finally) gone down. Poor kid is about beside himself - I sure hopes he sleeps better tonight (for all our sakes)

Waddesdon Manor

We had a lovely day with some friend enjoying a picnic and play as one of the "last hurrahs" before school begins again next week! The children brought along their scooters and completely enjoyed it. There were a few fantastic wooded playground areas, woods to explore, a bird aviary, galleries (including an Andy Warhal!), tea shops and even a sweet shop!

I took this photo of the manor and ornamental gardens, and I'm thrilled with how it turned out - it almost looks like a painting!

Foot Update

Several of you have asked how my foot is, and I appreciate the concern. I must say, Sir J has really stepped up and helped with a lot of the running up and down the stairs and carrying laundry up and down the stairs - what a wonderful guy! Jeff has also helped out by doing most of the outside errands (like grocery shopping) himself over the past few weeks. Last week it was finally beginning to feel better and more normal, however I still can't put on my regular trainers (running shoes) because it hurts across the top of the foot. I am basically back to "normal activity" now, and it hurts occassionally (like when I swat down, or when Sir C stomps on it accidentally). Today I overdid the walking a bit and it is sore this evening, but not unbearably. So, it's healing - slowly because I don't stay off it, but still healing!! Thanks for the love and concern!

A Child's Tender Heart

Today my 7-year old daughter learned a lesson about missionary-kid reality.

She is a wonderfully social young lady, and a very loyal friend. Since we have arrived in the UK we have struggled with her, as she attempted to keep contact with friends and cousins "back home" who simply aren't interested in connecting with her.

Earlier in the week we were able to connect, via Skype, with her "best friend" back in Canada. She was so excited to be able to chat with her friend, whom she often mentions, prays for and misses. Her friend was clearly less excited. After just a minute or so of formalities, she stated "I don't really remember much about you, and I have other friends that I play with now, so I really don't need to chat." And with that, the friend got down and walked away from the computer, leaving my daughter to chat with the friends Mum. She was a bit discouraged by it, but my ever-cheerful daughter smiled it away and said "It's ok, Mum, I have new friends here, so I can just visit with them instead."

Today, that was tested, too. A well-planned, much anticipated visit from her "best friend" in the UK just didn't happen, because a more important friend called on that friend. My daughter learned that, although she puts the friendship up high, and treasured it, to her friend, Lady R is just an "extra" friend - with very little hope of every being more important then that.

My optamistic daughter - the one who always sees the best in people - the one who had spent 3 days planning for this visit, and 3 hours yesterday making sure her room was "just right" - the one whose heart is big enough to love the world..... cried for herself. She cried as she realized that she is not "important" in the friendship of anyone else. She cried for the need to be totally accepted and missed by those she loves. She cried for the empty feeling in her heart - the space reserved for her best friends.
She took some time to herself, quietly contemplating, then, with a heart of GRACIOUSNESS she picked herself up and went out to find her younger brother and his friend - entertaining and engaging with them, determined to make this a great visit for them.

And my heart hurts for her. I know that empty space, reserved for a good friend, all too well. I wish I could fill it for her - or cover the hurt she feels, but I can't. I know that long-term, strong and lasting friendships with non-missionary kids are hard for missionary children to establish. God, please grant lasting and true friendships to my children with other children who will lift them up and encourage them to closer to You.

Sir J was bored. He watched a movie, played on the computer, and begged for more tv or computer time - despite my hesitations. Finally I told him that he needed to find something creative to do - and I wanted to see the results!

He disappeared for a while - I head the garage door open and close, but I didn't pay much heed to it, as I worked on getting school things organized for next week. Not long later he was back in, saying "Mommy, can I paint in the kitchen, it's a bit wet outside?" "Go ahead!" I said, thankful he had taken me seriously.

When I peeked in to see what he was doing, I was impressed! He asked me to cut out some holes, then went on back to his work. In the end, he'd created two bean-bag toss games for his siblings and the neighbourhood kids to enjoy! It was a great success!

Last week we spent preparing for Holiday Bible Club, and this week we ran it - alongside with a youth club in the evenings. It's been a great week, and God has blessed both with a good group of children, and youth, and also volunteers to run the program! We had such fun, and the Gospel was presented in a wonderful and clear way.

Considering Grandma

Today is my Grandma's birthday - or would be, if she was still alive. I didn't know my Grandmother extremely well as a child - she believed children should be seen and not heard, so most visits I was encouraged to be quiet while she was around -- in another room.

Over the past year and a half, however, I have thought of her more, I believe, then all my growing up years put together. Since she was from England, I have been learning more about her and why she responded to things the way she did -- just by understanding the subtle, unwritten rules of the culture around me. It may seem crazy, but I actually feel closer to her now. I wish I could have had a chance to get to know her better on an adult level.

And so, today, on her birthday, I'm missing my Grandmother, and thinking of her.

It's Time for Tea

Lady R hosted a holiday tea party today for 8 of her friends from school, church and the neighbourhood. She's been planning it for a while, and she and I had great fun shopping for it and prepping the house! The boys escaped the premises just before the first giggly seven-year-old crossed the threshold, and so began 3 hours of girly ribbons, dress-up, teddy bears, crafts, games, and surprises! The young ladies were all so well behaved, it was a pleasure to host them all! Lasting memories, I hope, for all of them.

What a RIOT!

Many people have asked us how close we are to the riots. The major riots are not in our area at all - the closest is about an hour away. There have been some small uprisings in our city - a couple of shops have been burned, and some damage to cars in the same area (about a 7 min drive from our house). Closer, our local grocery shop (5 min walk) was attacked during open hours, but the customers in the store grabbed the rioters and held them down on the ground until the police arrived, so there was no actual damage - the adults here are very frustrated and angry with the behaviour of the younger generation!

The riots have opened up some really good opportunities for us to speak to our neighbours and others about the hopelessness in the UK - and the ONE who can bring them hope! We are praying that God will be glorified despite the seemingly pointless destruction that is occuring.

Play Day

There is a center in the area with an indoor playground that the children enjoy visiting - especially when it's raining. Baby I usually sleeps in the pushchair while the others run, but now that he's becoming more mobile I decided to let him explore the baby section. I don't know who enjoyed it more - him, or his siblings playing with him!

Jeff took me into A&E today to get my foot checked out because it is not improving - in fact, it seems to be getting worse. I have a bruise on my wrist, one on my ankle, and a few on my foot - quite dark, so he's getting more concerned. I saw four doctors and nurses and they all said it looks fractured, but in the x-ray it looked fine - just severely bruised to the bone, they've said. The doctor said I am to keep icing it, keep it elevated, keep off it for 4-6 weeks to let it heal, then just minor use for 2-4 weeks after that.... I'm a mum of 4 kids, I just laughed at that! Either way, I feel better knowing that it's not broken, and glad, too, to know that I'm justified in the pain I feel. Do you think I can bribe the kids to wait on me??

Holiday Bible Club (VBS)

It's Holiday Bible Club time for our sister church, so Jeff and I (and our family) are heading up each day to lend a hand with the organization and leadership. Jeff is in the 10-11 year old kids, and I'm in the creche (nursery) which suits me well with a little man on my hip.

In my daughters class the children were given a couple of challenges to complete, and and she rose to meet them. The first one was to design a recycled house (from the story of the house on the sand vs. the house on the rock). She had a very specific idea of what she wanted - and it had to fit her polly pockets, so she and her brother diligently worked on her house for about 4 hours that evening!

The following evening she had to make a party dress out of newspaper! Whew! Again, she knew what she wanted - just needed a little help executing the plan. For this item she won first place - much to her delight, but honestly, she enjoyed making it so much that I don't think she really cared if she won or not.

Overall, it was a great week with over 100 kids present throughout the week!

He wanted to play football, so we went to a local club so the boys could play, then they enjoyed lunch and a football cake. He had a great time, and built some good memories today! :)

Holidays have finally begun! Today is the children's last day at school. Sir J is anxious for some holidays. Lady R is sad to leave her friends for the summer.... but we're all looking forward to some holidays next week - a bit of tenting, should be fun!

Sir J's teacher paid him a high compliment (it was "mufty day" - meaning no uniform) as she said goodbye. She said she wished she had a whole class full of Sir J's. She said he put 110% into everything he was asked to do, never talked back, always helped his classmates, and was always polite. She said, above all, he stood up for what he believed in such a gentle way that he earned the respect of everyone in his class - even his teachers. What a compliment!

A Visit from some special Ladies!

Two ladies from our home church came to visit this past week. We had such fun showing them around! It was truly a delight to have them here. It was time for them to return to the airport today, but we aren't quite ready to let them go. They brought some welcome reminders of home with them, and carry our love back to our friends and family.

We've worked hard to perfect our cars, and enjoyed racing them at Olympians today!

The kids cars did well - they each won an award for either design or speed in their catagories. Jeff also won a speed award... and I enjoyed being there! lol Next year I must be more competitive. Oh, who am I kidding? I'm not competitive at all, I just enjoy participating.

Sport Day - Lady R

Lady R participated in SPORTS DAY at her school. I have no photos to post because I was unable to get any pictures of her alone, and I don't feel comfortable posting other children's photos without their parent's permission.

She received an honour, being asked to be one of 4 group leaders form his class. She was in charge of keeping her group together and getting them to the right activity, and also to encourage her team as they participated in the challenges. She was chosen because of how well she encouraged the younger children during the time she spent helping out with their outdoor activities. It was such a joy to watch her as she gently guided her team - and she was the loudest group leader as she cheered her mates on! I was very proud of her!

MOVING DAY

Well, after loads of packing and preparing, MOVING DAY was here today! We had some great helpers to pack up the truck, unpack, help with the kids, serve up tea, and organize the men. What a blessing it was to go upstairs to my bedroom tonight and find my bed put together -- and all the sheets on it, ready to be slept in! The children's beds are all put together and made, also. I struggle a bit with the chaos of moving, but the majority of it is done now, with just details to manage during the rest of this week. We are going to need to purchase some furniture (like a dining room set, some bookshelves, and a fridge), but I think we are going to be just fine here. A friend from church has loaned us a couple of chairs for our living room - a blessing to have somewhere to sit down.

Sports Day - Sir J

It was SPORTS DAY for Sir J today! He had a blast - and his team came in second place!

He's even more excited that he is one of the few in his level to be selected to go to another nearby school tomorrow and host a sports day event for some younger children. What a great opportunity for him to practice his leadership skills! He was selected because he showed good reliability.

The children have a week off school this week, so we headed up to Cornwall, on invitation of a few other families from our church, for a camping trip! It was a 5 hour drive down some very skinny roads, but we saw some really beautiful countryside as we went - a completely different looking England then the part we live in!

PEANUT has joined our family!

She is a 10 week old fluffy ball of sweetness! She, her mother and her brother were abandoned in a barn when the babies were just 2 days old. They were taken in by our local rabbit foster care, and they contacted us about two weeks ago to ask if we would consider taking in the girl. After a lovely visit with the rabbit foster mum, this little, friendly white Easter bunny came home to meet Chester. It was love at first sight, and they are getting long very well! Chester is no longer lonely, but will enjoy having a playmate.

She was named by Sir C - apparently PEANUT BUTTER is his favourite food today!

The kids are thrilled to be back to piano lessons! Sir J has been in lessons before, but it is a completely new experience for Lady R. In just about three months of lessons, she's doing very well! She caught on to reading music very easily, and loves to sit down at the piano - she doesn't balk at practicing at all, in fact, she's quite happy to practice 3 or 4 times a day!

A Royal Wedding

We did consider heading to London with the family to join in the festivities revolving around the Royal Wedding, but came to the conclusion that it would be a more enjoyable experience for the children to remain in the area. Early this morning, Lady R was dressed up in her fancy dress and already enjoying the pre-wedding activities via BBC. She was especially taken in by all the hats!

Our street hosted a wedding party, complete with a bbq and bouncy castle! What a great way to connect with the neighbours! We then headed off to another wedding party that included face painting, games, and lots of great food and music. What a full day! One of Lady R's highlights of the day was trying on different kinds of hats and choosing one (just for fun - we didn't actually purchase it) that she would like to wear to the wedding.... are you surprised to know that it was PINK?

Shaped and Moulded

They're just rocks -- right? But as the ocean water crashes down on them, caresses them, bangs them down, rubs them and washes over them, they are moulded and shaped into beautiful, smooth forms, and the colours pop out from underneath the plain grey exteriors.

Isn't that how we are? As life and experiences wash over us, throw us around, and crash down over us - sometimes gently, sometimes not so gently, God forms us and smooths our rough edges, and changes us into something extra special, and allows our beautiful colours to shine through!

Only the rocks close enough to the water to be touched can be formed by the water. The ones further up on the shore remain grey and a little boring! Only if we are willing to allow ourselves to be formed and changed can we become extra special, collectable and amazing!

Giant Chalk Rocks!

Thanks to the recommendation of Uncle M, we packed up this morning and headed out to DOVER to see the white cliffs - WOW, what an experience! The National Trust was running an Easter Egg hunt, so the children enjoyed following the clues to find their prizes. Just a note for any others thinking of taking a stroll up the cliffs.... don't take the stroller (pushchair)!

The children were amazed by the GIANT CLIFFS OF CHALK - and brought some large rocks home with them.

They did come away with one question I could not answer.... if chalk dissolves in water, and the cliffs are receding due to the channel water.... why do the "mountains" of chalk not dissolve when it rains??

The weather couldn't have been better, and the children loved roaming (and running) through the grass and along the cliffs (not too close!!!) After our romp, we headed over (at Lady R's request) to find a beach -- with seashells! Our first attempt landed us on a very rocky, crowded shore, but the second one was perfect - sand and water, stretching forever.... and not a soul in site. It didn't take long for Sir C to head right into the water -- clothing and all. The water was much warmer then we expected it to be!

Are you getting too close?

Those rocks are so pretty. The ones closest to the water are the loveliest of all. The water has moulded them, shaped them, changed them, smoothed them.

The children love to collect rocks - it is often a contest to see who can find the prettiest, most unusually shaped, etc.

But how close to the water can one go before getting wet? If we watch the waves carefully, we can run down and grab the treasures, then dash away before getting caught.

Time and again, sir J dove forward to grabbed the rocks as the water receded, then jumped out of the way as the waves came reaching up again. But the time came, as the tide rose up, that he did get caught. The first time it was a laugh as the water grabbed at his shoes, but the second time soaked him all the legs. How often we are like that! We "play" at sin - getting as close as we can, without actually crossing the line... or better yet, cross the line when no one is looking, then it doesn't count, right? If you're quick enough you can dash away, and hide the fact that you were too close. But, as with the tide, sin will catch you up. Numbers 32:23 states that our sin will be found out. It will soak through your life, as the water soaked through Sir J's clothes. The best way to avoid the water, and also, sin? Keep a safe distance back!

Easter with Borrowed Family

One of the amazing things about working with a team is that when holidays come, they step in and become "family" for the children (and us adults, too!)

After the Easter church service, we gathered at the Bradley's to enjoy an Easter bbq. They succeeded in making the day very special, with dinner in the garden, easter baskets for all the children, and even an egg hunt! We are so blessed to be a part of this "family"!

Have you ever felt your stomach fall down to your feet? Such a sinking feeling that you feel sick? That is exactly how I felt when we finished our lunch yesterday in London, and I reached for the diaper bag / my handbag to get out some wipes for dirty faces. I knew I had placed it on the stroller (pushchair), but it was gone!

Panic set in instantly.

My mind whirled at an insane speed, trying to remember where it could be.

My stomach dropped like lead, and I felt ill.

My heart began to pound in my chest and I felt faint.

I tried to form prayers, but the words were unattainable - what a blessing that the Holy Spirit intervenes on our behalf when we don't know what to say!

Does this seem like an over reaction? Perhaps, but all I could think of was that handbag held all our family "essentials". There were replaceable things - like a Kindle, phone, camera, diapers and wipes, train ticket for getting home... but then there were the non-replaceable... all my identification, banking information, cheques, the families passports, and all the children's medical information (we have to carry Sir J's medical stuff with us). We've heard all the stories about how valuable Canadian passports are on the black market. We know how many tourists get pick-pocketed in London (and other large touristy areas in Europe). We've always been careful to keep our valuables close to us when we travel.... How could I have been so careless??

We rushed back to the place we had lunch - but no one had seen my handbag. From there we headed back to Harrods. My feet nearly flew as I rushed up the stairs, back to the only place I could remember setting down my bag - in the loo when I changed and fed the baby. We had joked on the way in about the attendants in the washrooms, watching our every move... but suddenly I was so grateful for that observant attendant. As I stepped into the beautiful powder room, she spotted me and stated "I knew you'd be back!" She had found my bag - and put it aside in a safe place -- then watched for my arrival.

What a rush of relief wooshed over me!

I don't think I even realized how panicked I had been until it was found. Praise God for His blessings, this could have ended in a very different way!

Visitors from Portugal

Some friends of ours, from Canada, moved to Portugal just before we left for England. They came to England for a visit, and we took our families off to London for a day! What a great experience! The children did so well, and got along great together. We're so glad they came!!

Nasty Nettles

We headed up for a group picnic in a field. As we got out of the van, the friend who had ridden along with us warned the children to "Watch out for the nettles!" I must admit, I didn't take too much mind to it, as the only thing I knew about nettles was that they can be used to make a tea that helps arthritis and anemia.

Now I wish that my knowledge of nettles still remained at that stage.

I pushed the stroller (pushchair) slowly along, following the children who were romping ahead. When it became too difficult to steer, I backed up and turned into another direction - but not before feeling an irritating sting on my ankle, above my sandal. I had barely touched the weeds - in fact, I hadn't even stepped into it, just brushed by as I turned around. It was certainly enough. I found a grassy spot, placed my blanket and we began to eat. My ankle began to itch - burning, actually. My friend pointed out the Dock Weed, and instructed us to use it to remove the stinging. It wasn't entirely effective. The stinging continued up my lower leg.

My daughter, also in sandals and bare feet, suddenly cried out - she, too, had been stung. I grabbed the Dock Weed. Then my younger son reached down to refasten his shoe - only to touch the dreaded stinging nettle with the back on his hand.

The crying and stinging continued as more children came into contact with the plant. The children didn't know what the plant looked like to stay away!

I was reminded of a passage of scripture that I memorized as a child - 1 Corinthians 15:55 - 56

It talks about the STING of sin - like the nettles, even just a brush with temptation can cause unforseen pain and anguish for he who comes in contact. How does one find relief from the itching and burning sting of sin and temptation? Only by allowing Jesus Christ to wash away the pain. Likewise, the only relief we could find from the nettles was to scrub them away when we got home. Does this mean that the consequences are washed away, too? Not at all. The nettles left cuts, marks and bruising that lasted for a week afterwards. Sin also leaves a mark, but we can be forgiven.

So, what have we learned? When walking in unknown fields, we must wear protection on our feet, and know what to look out for. Likewise, when we near temptation of sin, we must protect ourselves - know our Bible, compare everything to the scriptures, and be covered in prayer.

Beautiful Bluebells

It's bluebell time in Milton Keynes! They are beautiful!! The wooded areas look like they've been carpeted in blue. It only lasts about two weeks, but it's worth seeking them out!

Moshi Monsters?

My daughter came home from school a few weeks ago talking about MOSHI MONSTERS. "ALL the girls at school have one, Mum!" Apparently they are an online pet, but I really know nothing else about them. Has anyone else had any experience with Moshi Monsters? Are they like webkinz pets? Or Ty babies?

I Once Was Lost....

We had an escapee.

Chester the bunny, frisky with the spring weather, is on the lam. He escaped under the gate on Tuesday, and was nowhere to be found. We organized the willing neighbourhood children into search parties on Wednesday, and scattered them throughout the area -- with no success. To make matters worse, there was in "incident" on Monday with a pet bunny and a fox that lives in our area. We weren't holding out much hope for Chester - even though he does very well fending off the cats. Lady R, especially, has been holding Chester in her prayers regularly - she has such a soft heart!

Well, I am pleased to say, Chester has been FOUND. Apparently he was located in another back garden, looking for a sweetheart. He was picked up on Wednesday and taken to a bunny foster mum who lives just down the road from us. She knew he was a pet when she picked him up and he snuggled right in to her sweater. Some of the neighbourhood children were stopped and asked if they knew of anyone who had lost a bunny, and they pointed the foster mum right to our door -- we met a new neighbour! There were shouts of joy all around as the children welcomed their favourite pet back into the house - even the neighbours came over to celebrate the return of the bunny, and snuggle him a bit.

It really reminded me of the parables Jesus told about the lost sheep, the lost coin and the lost son. Chester directly reminds me of the lost sheep - how joyful the shepherd was to find the one, even though he had 99 others! How joyful was the wife who found her lost coin, and how amazingly joyful was the father when his son returned so long after leaving home. These all illustrate the deep love and concern that God has for those who are not on their way to Heaven. (they are "lost" to Christ) I don't think I could have planned a better illustration for my children -- a real life experience for these parables.

We had a spontaneous party when Chester was found - we celebrated and rejoiced. When one person decides to make Jesus Christ Lord of their lives, there is spontaneous rejoicing by the angels in Heaven!

What an amazing opportunity to talk to the neighbourhood kids about the Bible! God opens up doors in ways that we don't expect.

Skating!

Jeff took the children for a skating outing - they were let in free, with free skate rentals for an hour. It was the first time Sir C has ever been on skates, and he took to it very well! It is the same arena that Jeff plays hockey in. They have all asked for the chance to skate again!

Easter Break has arrived! In the UK, students get two weeks off of school, over Easter time. Lady R is a bit put out to not be seeing her friends for two weeks, but Sir J is thrilled to have the time off. Sir C is happy to have his brother and sister around to entertain him more this week!

So, what happens when four children are out of school, in a tiny house for two weeks??

A Technology Skeptic...

I have to admit, I'm a bit of a skeptic when it comes to new-fangled technology. E-readers, the new way to read a book, were no exception.

I love to read. When I was a younger person I read as much as I could get my hands on -- I'd read nearly anything, even my parents books, just to have something to read. I read my favourite books over and over and over again. I read nearly every good book in the library at least once - and many more then that. I borrowed books from anyone who would lend them to me, and devoured everything I could get my hands on.

I would read in the car, under my blankets at night with a light, in school with books tucked in my desk, on the playground -- anywhere! (and I am delighted to see this in my eldest son!)

My, how times have changed! Over the past number of years reading has become a necessity and a luxury instead of a way of life. Reading for school assignments, reading for lesson prep, reading for parenting tips, homeschool helps, etc. Reading, in many ways, has been replaced with knitting, because knitting I can do while paying attention to what the children are saying, or just to pick up and knit a line or two.

I have heard of e-readers, but somehow I just can't grasp reading from a handheld devise instead of reading from my coveted paperback books. How could it be the same?? I dismissed the hype about them, and thought no more of it.... until my birthday. What a surprise to unwrap a KINDLE e-reader from my husband and children! (it was a combined Christmas/birthday gift) I smiled and thanked them, and got to work setting it up, all the while wondering if I would really use it...

Well, here I am, 3 1/2 months later, and I can't believe how much reading I've been able to do in the past 3 months! I can't believe how easy it is to read - no eye strain! Clear, precise text. I can still highlight parts of the book, and keep notes on it. No more loosing my place in books, no more wondering if the library can get it in (and the libraries here are not great), no more loosing my books, no more running out of things to read - because there are always more books available! I think I'm in love with this technology I was so skeptical about! I can't get past how many FREE books are available for it -- thousands!! Yes, they aren't the newest books, but they are all the classic books you could ever want! There are also many free Christian books available. I can even put audio books on it (FREE from the libraries on-line website), and podcasts so that I can listen to books while preparing dinner, or share them with my hubby as we drive in the car. Downloading some children's books give the children a wonderful distraction while they wait for things (like waiting for church to start - we encourage our children NOT to run around, which means they sometimes need some help being still before church - Bible stories on audio book, with two children sharing the headphones is a fantastic tool!

The first book I downloaded (free) and read was John Paton's story. I was teaching a missionary story to our Olympians children on Paton, and parts of it left me with some questions - along with an interest in what he experienced. It filled in some gaps for me, and really enhanced my story! I've gone on to read several other books, both free and purchased (thanks mom for birthday money to buy books with!!), and I am delighted in all aspects of my kindle experience - and I would recommend it to anyone!! (my 9 year old would like one for his birthday - he's not getting one, but he'd like one, and I'm confident he would use it! Maybe as prices drop, it will be an option for him, too.)

It's Family Day!

It was FAMILY DAY at the Milton Keynes Don's Football club today (kids were only £1.00 each!) There were lots of things to see and do for the children before getting into the stadium - including a mini construction truck that they were allowed to ride and use to place pylons out! They were overwhelmed by everything! To top of the day, the MK Don's were kind enough to win the game - it was a great game to watch!

My Baby "I" is feeling poorly and having trouble breathing... every time he lays flat he can't seem to breathe properly, and he wakes up crying and coughing. I have a feeling it's going to be a long night if he continues to struggle...

I just want to tell you that my hubby is looking GREAT!!

He has lost over 60 pounds in the past 5 months - he's worked very hard! He's following a program called "Slimming World" that was created here in the UK. He's also working out, biking and playing hockey.

Tea for Three

Lady R has invited some friends over after school today, so I prepared a proper tea party for them -- with real strawberry tea! They were quite delighted with it. Afterwards they got to work, decorating 40 Easter Bunny cookies to share with their class tomorrow. I was quite impressed with their concentration and talent - sometimes I still think of Lady R as being so young... but she's really growing up quickly. I'm sure their classmates will be pleased with their efforts as they munch on their cookies tomorrow.

After dinner, Sir J decided he wanted a "go", too, so while the girls were making their way home, he took to the task of decorating the rest of the cookies all by himself - 40 bunnies and 20 flowers. I think his classmates will be pleased, too! He has a girl in his class with food allergies, so he was quite insistant that we also provide something suitable for her - I was impressed with his forethought and desire that everyone be included. As he headed off to bed he gave me a big hug and said "Thank you so much for making cookies for me to decorate, it's fun to do stuff with you". What a treasure - I'm sure the attitude won't last over the next few years, so I'm going to hold on tight while he still wants to "do stuff" with me!!
